Carpet emergency advice from Lymington's John Cooper Carpets

Aim to catch the spill quickly and in the right way to avoid long-term damage.

Here are some tips from Lymington carpet and flooring experts, John Cooper Carpets.

To remove the wax:

1. Scrape up excess with a blunt knife or plastic spatula.
2. Vacuum up the pieces to avoid rubbing the carpet.
3. Dampen a white cotton towel, fold it in half and place it over the wax.
4. Press an iron set on “high” over the towel for 10 seconds. The heat will draw the wax out of the carpet and into the towel.
5. Repeat until the wax is gone (you may have to hold the iron in place for up to 30 seconds). If the towel dries out, rewet it, and if it becomes loaded with wax, grab another one.
6. DO NOT use paper with the iron as it may overheat and burn the carpet.

To remove the stain:

1. DO NOT rub the surface of the pile.
2. Blot with surgical spirit* (available at chemists).
3. Then use a detergent vinegar solution*, a little at a time. (Mix up one teaspoonful of gentle detergent for washing woollens, to half a pint (0.3 litres) of warm water. Then add one teaspoonful of white (not malt) vinegar).
4. Work from the outer edge of the stain inwards and frequently blot with dry cloths.
5. Spray ‘final rinse solution*’ over the stained area. (Spray bottle containing one-part white vinegar and four parts water).
6. DO NOT over-soak the stain (try to keep the carpet as dry as possible)
7. Blot dampened area (do not rub) to remove excess moisture.
8. Spread white kitchen towel (stacked 6-8 sheets deep) or absorbent cloth over the affected area and place a weight, such as a heavy book, on top.
9. Leave overnight and repeat if necessary

* as recommended by the NCCA (National Carpet Cleaning Association)

Some carpet stains will be more difficult to deal with, but according to the NCCA, the process outlined above should  should help prevent some quite common and expensive DIY stain removal damage. Unfortunately, there can never be a guarantee of complete removal of a stain, but the correct routine will give a professional cleaner, if called in, the best possible chance of success.

You should always test any solution/detergent on an inconspicuous area of carpet prior to treating a stain and be sure to use detergents at recommended dilution ratios. Always apply the cleaning fluid to the absorbent spotting material not directly onto the carpet or fabric.

2. Then brush or vacuum off as much as possible to avoid rubbing the carpet.

To remove the stain:

If you have previously always opted for wool carpets, it’s worth taking a few minutes to consider the benefits of ‘modern lifestyle’ carpets.

 In Alan’s words:

“In the last 5 years we have seen a massive shift towards the sale of more polypropylene carpets over more traditional wool blends. In fact whereas 10 years ago the market was 70% wool and 30% polypropylene, now it’s the reverse.  And there are some good reasons why that’s come about."

 Whilst we’ll never fall out of love with wool, there are some big pros to polypropylene- and they’re not only to do with price.

The major advantages are:-

Remove the stain, not the colour!

Polypropylene has fantastic resistance to stain and soiling. It is not dyed to a particular colour, it is made using yarn that is manufactured from the chosen colour. Like a stick of rock it has the colour all the way through. So when an unfortunate accident occurs, you simply can’t rub the colour away with the stain. Which if you have dogs or young children – or older ones who insist on taking their food into the living room! – is definitely worth consideration.

Polypropylene is actually bleach cleanable - so not only can you remove the stain without the colour, you can also use something quite strong like a bleach solution, to clean it quickly and effectively.

Polypropylene is cheaper than wool

It has to be said that Polypropylene is typically also much cheaper than wool blends. The cost of wool has increased by about a third in the last few years. Whilst polypropylene has simply matched inflation – but at the same time has dramatically improved in performance, looks and feel.

But polypropylene doesn’t mean “cheap”. A really good quality 2-ply polypropylene carpet such as those made by Greendale Carpets is a viable alternative to a good wool carpet, saving about 25% on a like for like basis.

Polypropylene is mothproof!

Polypropylene carpets are definitely the best option if you have had a bad experience with carpet moth. Over the last 20 years we have seen a dramatic increase in the occurrence of carpet moth, it seems the little ‘blighters’ have become immune to treatments. Polypropylene is great because being a man-made fibre it is not part of the diet of the moths.

Lymington property prices make it fifth most expensive seaside location in the country

Annual review reveals Lymington amongst Sandbanks, Salcombe and Padstow

According to the Halifax Seaside Town Review, the average price of property in Lymington is £426,112, whilst the UK's most expensive coastal houses are (unsurprisingly) in Sandbanks (£664,655). Eight of the top 10 most expensive seaside towns were in south-west England.

Halifax found that average house prices on the coast have gone up by £440 a month over the past ten years. On average property prices have increased by 32 per cent from £166,565 in 2006 to £219,386 in 2016. Halifax used house price figures from the Land Registry and the Registers of Scotland for the report, covering 196 seaside towns across Britain.

The 10 most expensive seaside towns in Britain, according to Halifax:

2. Salcombe, Devon, £539,950
3. Padstow, Cornwall, £443,396
4. Aldeburgh, Suffolk, £439,379

The least expensive was Scotland's Port Bannatyne on the Isle of Bute, where the average house price is £77,132. In fact, Scotland dominated the list of least expensive seaside towns. About eight properties could be bought in Port Bannatyne for the price of an average home in Sandbanks.

A fresh new architectural face in Lymington

 Introducing Forest Architecture and Natalie Skeete

If you’re in need of some creative “vision” for a building project and are looking for something a little bit different and exciting yet also sympathetic to its context, there’s a new young architect in Lymington Town - and first impressions are impressive.

Natalie Skeete is the sole proprietor of Forest Architecture, a new architectural practice in Lymington. She grew up in London, gained a first class degree in Architecture at Portsmouth University and a Masters at the University of Bath where she is currently a visiting tutor. Now living in Lymington she’s keen to take on more local work in the New Forest and Hampshire. She’s young, clever and talented, enthusiastic and empathetic - and Lymington is lucky!

Range of creative, often challenging projects

Natalie loves to work on exciting, challenging assignments which are sometimes unusual too. To give you an idea of her creativity and capabilities, here are a couple of examples of recent and current projects - you can read the full stories and view many more photographs and plans, on the Forest Architecture website.

New build

 
This is a new build office in front of an existing shed, with access points between both buildings at ground floor level, making the most of a northerly aspect for internal working conditions, whilst maximising light and valley view for the “special” meeting room. Natalie has used metal cladding to match the neighbouring building for the roof and the external walls, accented with idigbo timber around all window and door reveals. The finishing touches, which add so much.

Renovation project

This is an imaginative renovation of and new rear extension to a private house in Milford on Sea which was once a gamekeeper’s store. The old, listed building had suffered from damp and decay over the years. Natalie is creating a deceptively simple modern textured glass and brick extension which will allow maximum light into the new dining space, whilst new doors connect seamlessly to the rear garden. Subtle, airy, spacious – beautiful.

Planning permission taken care of

Natalie has just taken on her first local full private house commission, a completely new build in Sway. She is also working with a local church in Lymington and on a number of projects for listed buildings, often in conservation areas or with other difficult constraints. She deals with all the planning applications and processes, which has helped her rapidly to become an expert in the particular requirements of our local planning departments.

Don’t be deterred if your project is on a smaller scale - Natalie will be delighted to discuss it with you, if you’re prepared to give her some creative free rein.

For a first meeting Natalie usually prefers to come to visit you at the proposed site. If this is a local meeting it is normally free of charge.

She’ll ask you about your “must haves” and your “nice to haves”, and will take photos for her reference. She’ll show you examples of relevant work from her portfolio. A new carpet makes sound economic sense

There’s been a revolution in carpet technology in the last 5 years. Where everybody used to think wool was the thing and the more expensive the better, nowadays modern polypropylene is bleach cleanable, comes in a fabulous range of contemporary colours and is suitable for the heaviest domestic use.

If you want a light shade of carpet it’s now possible to get a pale carpet with lovely finish and texture, which is also practical. There are also some new soft polypropylenes which look and feel fabulous whilst being just as hard wearing.

Since polypropylene is considerably cheaper than wool, it’s a win win all round! Rather than making do and mending as we used to, it may make sense to treat yourself to a new carpet!
