Hurst Castle is taking part in Heritage Open Day on 19th September, with free entry to the castle all day. Discover this historic coastal fortress at your own pace, explore its unique role in defending the Solent, and enjoy the stunning views across to the Isle of Wight. 

Throughout the day, the Fort Cumberland Guard will bring history to life with an atmospheric military re-enactment, complete with authentic uniforms and drills that showcase what life was like for soldiers stationed at the fort. Volunteers from the Palmerston Forts Society will also be on hand to talk about the castle’s historic guns, sharing their specialist knowledge and answering questions from visitors of all ages. Children can get hands-on with lots of free activities, including crafts and a family-friendly history trail, making it a perfect day out for all ages. 

No booking is required; take a leisurely stroll along the shingle bank to the castle or opt for a fun ferry ride and arrive by water (ferries are run by a separate company – please see our website for details). Come and enjoy a full day of heritage, learning, and fun by the sea.
