Burley is a village and civil parish in the New Forest, Hampshire. It has ancient origins and is now mostly tourist orientated. It is located roughly 4 miles south-east of the town of Ringwood. The village is fairly scattered, apart from the village centre. Burley has a post office, newsagents, butcher’s shop, and village stores, as well as tea rooms, a couple of clothing shops, antique shops and pubs. The village still practises the old tradition of communing, allowing animals to graze on the open Forest, and ponies and cattle roam freely around the village. Burley is home to a football club, a cricket club and Burley Golf Club to the southeast of the village. It is surrounded by the open heathland of the New Forest, containing a complex of woodland, heathland, acid grassland, scrub and valley bog, supporting a great richness and vast biodiversity. Burley is also thought to have been populated since the Bronze Age, as at least 23 barrows from this time are known in the area. The parish of Burley now has a population of 1,301 people.
