Located in its own self-contained area, the Lower Prep has a family feel where children can feel secure but also able to stretch into new areas of discovery and learning. The ethos is about developing thinking skills, encouraging independent learning, developing interdependence and responsibility, all in readiness for Upper Prep. The full Ballard experience in performing arts, art, dance, sport, design and technology, expressive arts and modern foreign languages delivered by specialist teachers plus wide-ranging extra-curricular activities are available to all pupils in this age group together with use of the extensive Ballard facilities and resources.
The organisation is form-based teaching with some subject specialisation and all with small class sizes. The curriculum is broad and the extra-curricular activities also give working parents more scope for flexibility.
Ballard School nurtures academic potential in each pupil, whatever their level. It is an approach that harnesses the innate ability of each individual, but which does not focus exclusively on the purely academic, standing each pupil in good stead for the challenges that senior education present. In addition to the core subjects, there is extensive coverage of other subject areas, such as modern foreign languages, design and technology, performing, expressive and visual arts, ICT and sport plus personal, social and health education. A stepped increase in the amount of homework over this period prepares the pupils for the demands of the formal examinations that they will sit. Flagship examinations in Year 8 provide valuable experience and information on the best way forward.
Regular school productions and competitive matches and tournaments with other schools plus a wide range of extra curricular activities help to develop the experience while day trips and residential stays broaden the children’s horizons and extend their knowledge beyond the constraints of the curriculum. Assemblies and form time are another feature of the Upper Prep experience and the small class sizes mean that the staff can genuinely engage with each child and understand his or her strengths.
Ballard's popular senior school has its own mini campus within the school grounds and our objective is to help produce well rounded and well qualified young men and women ready to progress to their first choice venue for further education. Whilst still offering the full all round Ballard experience, the pace and intensity of academic rigour moves up a gear in this part of the school. An attractive range of GCSE subjects is offered and the school has an enviable results record as the leading non-selective independent school in the area. Small class sizes and individual attention remain at the cornerstone of the Ballard experience with the culmination of the GCSE exams in Year 11.
Purposeful teaching supported by sensible discipline and pastoral care provides the supportive foundation to enable students to thrive. The Ballard all round experience is also maintained with extensive opportunities in sport, performing and visual arts, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, foreign exchanges and trips, Young Enterprise and a wealth of activities. Challenge Week, held at the end of year 9 is a fantastic opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills, experience adventure, life skills and various career opportunities.
