Call It Compassion
Last weekend I finally caught up with the Christmas Special of Call the Midwife, the long-running TV series about a group of nurse midwives working in London’s East End during the 1950s, 60s and 70s. As ever, it was a timely reminder of what care really looks like: good people putting the needs of others first, with kindness, resilience and an unwavering determination to put things right, even in the toughest circumstances. It also evoked a time long before the online age, when life revolved around belonging to a close-knit, real-life community.
That same spirit of compassion feels very present today at Oakhaven Hospice, recently praised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for its 'outstanding compassionate care'. Behind those words are real people - teams who listen, support and act with empathy every single day, often in life’s most challenging moments, and always with dignity at the heart of what they do. As Melville Kendal, Oakhaven’s Chair of Trustees, so aptly said: “Outstanding care comes from the people who provide it.” We are blessed indeed that our outstanding local hospice is there for us, when we ourselves need that compassionate care.
Winter has a way of reminding us what truly matters, and strong communities are still built on compassion, commitment and a shared desire to care well for one another. If that idea speaks to your soul, you might like to attend this year’s New Forest Volunteer Fair, taking place next Sunday, 25 January, at Brockenhurst Village Hall. More than 50 organisations will be represented, with stalls, information and friendly faces ready to explain the wide range of volunteering opportunities available across the Forest - and the chance to become part of a meaningful, nurturing community with a shared purpose.
All About The People
Meanwhile at Scott Bailey Solicitors everyone knows, that a law firm too is only as strong as the people behind it. Over the years, that belief has shaped not just how the firm works with clients, but also how it builds its team.
Scott Bailey’s home is a characterful old building on Lymington High Street, full of warmth, personality - and more than a few creaky floorboards. It feels more like a shared workspace than a corporate office, and that is very much by design. Today, the team of over 50 includes partners, lawyers, trainees, apprentices, and support staff across a wide range of legal specialisms. The work is interesting, the atmosphere is friendly, and the people are genuinely supportive and refreshingly down to earth.
As the firm continues to grow, it is looking to welcome new colleagues who want to be part of something truly supportive, rooted in the local community, and built for the long term. If you think you might enjoy a career in a law firm where people matter, flexibility is respected, and community comes first, Scott Bailey could be the perfect fit. Read on!

- 7-8 Mar: The New Forest Marque Spring Producers Market at Everton Nurseries. Over 20 New Forest based food, drink, art and craft producing members of the New Forest Marque will be back for this hugely popular 2 day event held in March and October. There's plenty of parking, it's dog friendly and Camellia's restaurant will serve a range of refreshments including delicious homemade cakes.
