Where There's A Will...

I have a feeling I used this same line last year but no matter. September is an excellent time to catch up on things we've been meaning to do for a while, like making or updating our wills. And there is a Way! Please read more below, first from Scott Bailey about how you can include gifts of various kinds in your will and then from Oakhaven Hospice, about Write a Will Month.

For the next 3 weeks I will be on a long-planned visit to family in Canada, including trekking into the 'back country' when I'll be out of touch with the rest of the world! Time spent on ‘work’ will be kept to a minimum: when I can I'll publish newly added events, but this newsletter will be shorter than usual and may arrive on a different day of the week. Thank you in advance to all Members and readers for your understanding.

Tomorrow as part of the National Garden Scheme, you are invited to Open Garden at Woodpeckers. Then for the whole month of September, RHS members can enjoy free entry to Exbury Gardens.

Tomorrow is also  Falconry Day at Exbury Gardens with flying displays of trained hawks at 11.30 and 1.30 - a rare chance to get up close to this ancient and spectacular sport.

Next Wednesday there's an opportunity to attend An Evening of Mediumship at Lymington Community Centre. Previous shows have sold out so if your interest is piqued to find out more about this fascinating subject, book now!

A reminder about the very special Orchestra and Opera at Kingfishers next weekend. If you haven’t bought tickets yet, both performances promise to be a real treat. A massive amount of work is going in to the preparation and all the proceeds will go to Hammersley Homes; do support and enjoy one or both if you can.

Next weekend is also the annual International Autojumble at Beaulieu. It will draw enthusiasts and amazing vintage vehicles from far and wide and promises a very special day out for all.

Autumn classes are now beginning at the Kitchen Cookery School at Chewton Glen and September's have been added below. More about these in the coming weeks.

And finally, there was another article worth mentioning in the Echo this week, about the history of Efford Experimental Horticultural Station. This took me back to my long ago pocket money earning job of picking blackcurrants at Efford. The picking was very strictly managed, in little clusters with your thumbnail against your forefinger, which after not long led to a very sore finger. Don't worry, the article is much more interesting than that... read here.

Wishing you a very enjoyable final weekend of the summer holidays, before exhausted parents can take a breather!

Best wishes Jane

How to leave meaningful gifts in your will

This Week's Focus: Wills

New Article by Scott Bailey:
'How to Leave Meaningful Gifts in Your Will'

This article by the Wills, Trust and Probate solicitors at Scott Bailey LLP about the different types of gifts you can leave in your will, is also helpful background to Make a Will Month.

First and foremost of course, writing a will is about peace of mind. Knowing your wishes are written down and legally valid helps to prevent confusion or disputes down the line. It also ensures that your generosity reaches the right people or organisations in the way you intended.

Making a will is also though an opportunity to make a lasting gesture, whether that's to family and friends, or to causes that have supported us during our lifetimes.

Gifts can be 'specific', 'pecuniary' or 'residuary' - these terms are all explained in the article.

Charitable legacies to registered charities can be a meaningful way to show appreciation for the care you or your loved ones have received, and to ensure that support continues for others in future. Even leaving a small percentage of your estate could make a huge difference to a local charity’s work. And, as a bonus, gifts to registered charities are exempt from inheritance tax.

The article goes on to outline the points you should consider in including gifts or legacies in your will, and examines some of the common mistakes to avoid.  All valuable reading prior to meeting your solicitor.

Write a Will Month September:
Local Solicitors Waive their Usual Fee
to Support Oakhaven Hospice

This September, once again Oakhaven Hospice has teamed up with local solicitors and estate planners for Write a Will Month. For basic wills and 'mirror' wills (for couples) participating solicitors will waive their usual fees; instead of paying the solicitor, you make a donation to the hospice. Life is full of milestones: house purchases, marriage, children or divorce. So if you already have a will and it needs updating, it's the perfect opportunity.

The way it works is to start by contacting one of the participating solicitors and estate planners, and make an appointment which must take place by 31 October (each firm has a limited number of appointments available). Then, follow the links to make the donation to Oakhaven and be ready to take the email confirmation to your appointment. Have a think before your appointment about whether you would like to leave any gifts in your new will - do read the Scott Bailey article which is very helpful background.

With just 11% of Oakhaven’s funding coming from the government, legacies are a vital cornerstone of support. They ensure the hospice can continue its much-needed work, caring for families across the New Forest, Totton, and Waterside communities well into the future. Do bear in mind, if you are considering leaving a legacy in your new will!
