Let's Hear It For The Boys - And The Buoys!

Judging by the number of Father's Day cards on sale this year it's becoming an ever bigger calendar occasion, and given that so many boys love messing about in boats and racing around buoys, let's this weekend feature a lovely sight from the Solent!

The Royal Lymington Yacht Club's XOD Week is one of the most anticipated events on the Solent sailing calendar and this year's takes place between Saturday 21 and Wednesday 25 June. XOD Week is a cornerstone of the traditional keelboat racing season, drawing sailors from across the south coast to compete in the historic - and hugely competitive -  X One Design (XOD) class. RLymYC is also delighted to announce that this year's XOD Week is being sponsored by Steele Raymond LLP, a leading full-service law firm based in Bournemouth, Southampton and Poundbury.

Lymington's own leading law firm Scott Bailey LLP (with offices in Lyndhurst too!) sponsored last month's Solent Music Festival, about which I've been enthusing for the last few weeks. I am happy that Scott Bailey's June article for Lymington.com is about the festival - because it really was SO BRILLIANT! See below!

And now for Father's Day, on which according to Wikipedia we 'honour our own fathers as well as fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society' - which should give all of us someone or something on which to reflect this Sunday!

This weekend Exbury Gardens celebrates 'Railway 200' which commemorates 200 years of rail travel, with its own Days of Steam exhibition. Discover a fascinating array of model railways across a variety of scales, gauges and eras. Working steam and traction engines will be trundling through the gardens as well as Exbury’s very own narrow gauge steam railway. Enthusiasts from the New Forest Model Railway Society will be on hand to give hints and tips on how to build model railways at home, with layouts from 30ft long to those you can keep on a windowsill. The exhibition is free with gardens admission, which is half price for dads on Sunday.

Sunday is also the day of The Custom & American Show at Beaulieu, or you could embark on an adventurous Father’s Day Papa’s Paddle to the Pub with New Forest Activities or the 3 Villages Community Bike Ride with Transition Lymington.

Or, what a great excuse for a visit to Beaulieu to see the new exhibition Icons of Formula 1, or the brand new Sculpture at Beaulieu which opens today in the grounds of Palace House. While in the other direction, it's the popular annual Highcliffe Food & Arts Festival this weekend.

For some gentler Father's Day entertainment, Lymington Town Band presents a Free Summer Concert at the Bandstand on Sunday.

As summer warmth arrives we're also inching closer to the Solstice and Midsummer's Day, and with them the beginning of that very special season of Summer Fetes. It would be nice to have all the local fetes included in our Events Calendar, so if you're an organiser and haven't added yours yet please do follow the guidelines here. And if you have a favourite fete and don't see it in the Events Calendar, do let the organisers know that it's free to add it. Next week we'll focus on fetes!

Best wishes Jane

Grand piano and musicians in St Thomas Church

A WEEK OF MUSIC, JOY AND WORLD-CLASS TALENT!

That's the verdict on this year's Solent Music Festival, this time in the words of the team at Scott Bailey Solicitors instead of me!

"There’s something quite magical about hearing live music in a beautiful setting - and this year’s 13th Solent Music Festival delivered magic in abundance. Taking place through the week of 24 to 30 May at St Thomas Church, just next door to the Scott Bailey offices, the festival brought a week-long celebration of music to Lymington, and we were very proud to be the official sponsor.

From classical masterpieces to uplifting jazz, each and every concert was packed, with the audience often finishing the night with a standing ovation. The variety of music has always been part of the festival’s charm, and whether you’re a seasoned concertgoer or new to the genre, there’s something for everyone. We are incredibly lucky to be treated to world-class music right on our doorstep and our heartfelt thanks go to the entire Festival team and the extraordinary musicians who made this another unforgettable week of music and celebration.”
