New Forest and Hampshire County Show 2019
A brief appreciation of a brilliant show
Others will report on the facts and stats of the 2019 New Forest and Hampshire County Show once they’re available; meanwhile social media feeds have as usual lamented the traffic jams but with the greatest respect they’re really missing the point. This is after all THE biggest event of the year in the New Forest calendar and actually the organisers do an amazing job at vehicle management but there are simply bound to be some delays when you’re moving this amount of traffic in a short window of time at the beginning and end of the day.
The weather playing its part as always
Showers on the first day didn't dampen any spirits and it just got better on days 2 and 3 as the sun came out and the temperature rose, and people flocked to the ever-popular annual event, now in its 99th year.
Traditional and modern
Few will now remember the first one day show in 1921 organised by the New Forest Agricultural Show Society, but some of us can distinctly recall exciting days out as children to “The Show” to enjoy the spectacles literally ringside, the picnic rugs spread out in front of the cars parked behind us!
In fact it’s apparently also the 38th year of the Heavy Horses Musical Drive which is for many people including ourselves always the high point of an already excellent day but we didn't quite realise it had been going for such a long time!
Meanwhile the Show has evolved and grown and whilst retaining its traditions has also moved with the times and continued to attract ever more people and provide a fantastic day (and for some 2 or even 3 days!) of varied entertainment.
Simply to say thank you
At this stage and with the authority of having attended for 2 (the good weather ones!) of the 3 days between us, we would mainly like to express our appreciation of the immense organisational feat, the vast array of wonderful things to do and see and in which to take part, and the fantastic atmosphere - wherever we trod a path we only found contented people, families and groups of friends, from the very young to the pretty old and all ages in between, chatting and mellow, some shopping, some watching the events in the rings, some eating and drinking, and all quite clearly having a wonderful day out.
We are above all overwhelmingly grateful to the commentators in the two main rings whose faces most of us don’t know but whose astonishing encyclopaedic knowledge about so many subjects all told in calm authoritative tones adds immeasurably to our understanding and enjoyment of the events themselves. Thank you indeed, Carys Knox and Nick Brooks-Ward who even has the same dulcet tones as his father Raymond Brooks-Ward who did the job before him and who having apparently ‘owned’ the microphone at every prestigious equestrian event for over 15 years, most notably at London 2012, we are indeed fortunate to have at the New Forest Show. We particularly want to say thank you to Nick, who officially closed the Show having publicly thanked everybody else involved - and then hurried away to get on with the next task!
We hope many of you enjoyed the videos we’ve been sharing on our Facebook page over the last two days and we hope you’ll also enjoy some of the photos in our Gallery below, we’ll be adding to it so come back and take another look in a few days time.
