Cupcakes raise dementia awareness - and smiles all round!
Lymington's dementia specialist Linden House decorated cupcakes as part of a national campaign for the Alzheimer's Society
Colten Care’s Linden House in Lymington, produced a feast of cakes festooned with sprinkles and sweets for the Alzheimer’s Society’s Your Cupcake Day campaign, raising awareness of dementia.
In the average time it takes to bake a batch of cakes, six people in the UK will develop dementia. It is now the leading cause of death in England and Wales, overtaking both cancer and heart disease.
Through the simple act of decorating and selling cakes, Your Cupcake Day helps fund pioneering research and crucial support services and has raised more than £2.7 million since it began in 2016.
Linden House is one of Colten Care’s dedicated dementia homes and residents Marigold Jordan, Roger Bennett and Betty Scrace eagerly decorated cakes, helped by Colten Companions Chris Dimmick and Caroline Gregg.
Marigold said: “It’s a long time since I decorated a cake, but it’s very relaxing and I’ve really enjoyed it.”
Roger agreed: “I can’t pretend to be an expert in cake decorating but I’m pretty impressed by my attempt and I’m certainly looking forward to eating it later!”
Tracy Logan is one of Colten Care’s Admiral Nurses; specialist dementia care nurses who give expert practical, clinical and emotional support to families facing the challenges of dementia.
Tracy, who is based at Linden House said: “Our homes are proud to support Your Cupcake Day.
“Baking and cake decorating is an activity which can evoke pleasant memories in everyone, including people with dementia and knowing we are also supporting the fight against dementia is extremely satisfying.”
She added: “Some of our residents decorated their cakes to a background of their favourite music and took part in competitions, winning prizes for their efforts.
“Residents at Colten Care’s Court Lodge in Lymington and our newest home, Bourne View in Poole also took part and between them have raised several hundred pounds for the initiative.”
