Things to do during the February school holidays in the New Forest area

Here's our guide of what's on locally for visitors and locals. For those having to juggle work with school holidays, we have information about holiday childcare.

Fun Days Out

Film Chitty outside Palace HouseGet hands on at Beaulieu!

It's Hands on Half Term activities at Beaulieu from 16 to 24 February. It's a great time of year to visit Beaulieu, which has plenty to do inside and out - including the National Motor Museum, Palace House, Beaulieu Abbey, World of Top Gear, the Secret Army Exhibition and more! Become an inventor, see wonderful machines from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and then take part in activities to invent your own creations. 

Lymington.com Top Tip! Get a discount when you buy your tickets online at least one day in advance. Plus visit again within 6 days free of charge - perfect if its a cold day - spread out all the things to do over several days! 

Swing into action at New Forest Adventure Golf!

Film Chitty outside Palace HouseNew Forest Adventure Golf is open throughout half term from 10am, last admission 3pm. Built with children in mind, it's also fun and challenging for adults. The beautifully landscaped course is a high spec 18 hole discovery adventure of the New Forest, including Isle of Wight ferry, Lymington and Beaulieu Rivers and New Forest towns and villages.

Be inspired by wildlife at St Barbe! 

St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery is open throughout half term, with a children's Wildlife Photography Trail around their current exhibition (The British Wildlife Photography Awards 2018 - on until 17 March). Play the Wildlife 'Find and Match' game, build nature puzzles inspired by the wildlife exhibition and use your phone to take a selfie with the special guests popping straight out from the exhibition.

Visit Lymington Market every Saturday from 8am to 4pm, come rain or shine! A traditional market, established in 1250, there are now over 100 traders who regularly attend. 

Get Active this half term!

New Forest Activities ArcheryNew Forest Activities have a number of outdoor activities for families. Try Winter Paddling, exploring the stunning Beaulieu River nature reserve by boat. The Family Adventure Day combines kayaking along the Beaulieu River with cycling in the New Forest. Or try your hand at Winter Archery

This half term at Ballard School are holding mixed sports and gymnastics camps from Tuesday 19 to Friday 22 February. Sports include hockey, football, rugby, gymnastics*, handball, volleyball, tchouckball, dodgeball... and more! For children in school years 5 to 9: 9am to 4pm, for children in school years 1-4: 9am to 12pm. Open to all, not just pupils at Ballard School.

Durlston Court Prep School have Football with Southcoast Football on Monday 18 February (see below for creative activities too)

Lymington Tennis Club will be running full day and half day tennis camps Monday 18 to Friday 22 February. Half days are either morning or afternoon.
 
Park Run takes place every Saturday morning at 9am in Lymington at Woodside Park (meet by the Pavillion) and at Wilverley Inclosure. Remember to register beforehand and bring your bar code!

If the weather is kind, make use of our local facilities, including tennis courts, table tennis tables and outdoor gym at Woodside Park, plus the chess/draughts table at Bath Road Park.

At Durlston Court Prep School half term activities include Children's Cookery Workshop on Saturday 16 February, Ceramics Workshop on Monday 18 February and a Mixed Media Art Workshop on Thursday 21 February. There are also art and crafts during Dragon Day (see below) on Wednesday 20 February.

Get building at Construction Club at Lymington Library on Saturday 16 and 23 February.  

Learn about the New Forest and get hands on with crafts a Family Discovery Day at the New Forest Heritage Centre: Tuesday 19 and Thursday 21 Febuary.

At Furzey Gardens in Minstead, Decorate a Fairy or Castle Door from Monday 18 to Friday 22 February. 

There are family craft sessions at the Red House Museum in Christchurch: Weaving on Tuesday 19 February and Pirates on Thursday 21 February. 

Come along to The Monster Rubbish Thing with children's author and illustrator Simon Chadwick reading his latest book The Rubbish Monster Thing, plus crafts and book signing. On Monday 18 February at Lymington Library and on Friday 22 February at Lyndhurst Library (pm) and Hythe Library (am).

Elephant Crafts drop in session at Lyndhurst Library on Wednesday 20 February and at Lymington Library on Thursday 21 February. Plus Hythe Library have an Elmer themed story and craft session on Tuesday 19 Febryary.

Drama, Culture and Comedy

At Durlson Court Prep School participate in School of Comedy on Monday 18 February and Dragon Day & Cinema Trip to see How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World on Wednesday 20 February.

Ralph Breaks the Internet (PG) is showing at Lymington Community Centre's Malt Cinema on Monday (11am), Tuesday (2.30pm), Wednesday (11am) and Thursday (2.30pm)

Join the MY Museum Club MC2 at St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery on Sunday 17 February where the Winner of the New Forest Photography Competition will receive their prizes and talk about their photographs. MY Museum Club MC2 is a monthly club for 6-11 year olds.

And there's a Children's Half Term Drama Workshop on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 February at East Boldre Village Hall.

Discover Nature this half term!

Learn all about Seasonal Bushcraft in Winter on Wednesday 20 February at the Countryside Education Trust in Beaulieu. Also on Wednesday 20 February there is also a Half Term Treasure Hunt for children aged 7 and above.

bushcraftdaymar10 3And for 4-6 year olds at the Countryside Education Trust Big Owls will be at the Farm on Wednesday 20 February, getting going in the garden!

Explore Lepe Country Park with a half term trail, available 10am-3pm all week, plus Bird Aware Day on Tuesday 19, Family Bush Craft on Wednesday 20 and Nature Detectives on Thursday 21.

Cathryn Baldock won first prize in the 2018 New Forest Open Art competition with her piece entitled, "All the Leaves are Brown." Visit her exhibition at the New Forest Heritage Centre, called Reimagining the New Forest.

Meet a New Forest Ranger at Ringwood Library on Tuesday 19 February between 3.30 and 5pm and at Hythe Library on Wednesday 20 February 10am - midday.

Things for preschoolers during Half Term

toddler groupsSchool holidays can be soul-destroying for parents whose children have not yet reached school age as many clubs, drop ins and classes only happen in term time. Thankfully the following are on during half term to help you retain some structure and sanity!

At Lymington Library there will be the Tuesday Rhyme Time, Thursday Baby Play and Thursday Toddler Time as usual. 

At Lyndhurst Library there will be Tuesday Terrific Tales for Tiny Tots and Wednesday Tots and Tinies

At New Milton Library there will be Monday Rhyme Time and Thursday Story Time as usual - please note that New Milton library will close for refurbishment on 25 February until 23 April. 

At Ringwood Library there will be Tuesday Tots and Tinies and Thursday Story Time.

At Hythe Library there will be Baby Rhyme Time and Toddler Rhyme Time on Monday as usual, plus Friday Story Time.
