Lymington's Hannah Snellgrove is UK champion for third year!
Congratulations to Hannah for winning her third UK National Laser Radial championship last week.
The National Championships for the Laser Standard, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 took place at the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy. Two victories for Hannah saw her successfully defend her national title with a day to spare.
Hannah found the competition "really fun". "It's great (to have won a third title). It's really nice. Last year meant a huge amount to me because there were a couple of people there who I really struggled to beat. Guys like John Emmett, who is coaching in Rio, and my training partner Ben Elvin, so last year it was really special. However, triple champion sounds nice, so I'll really enjoy this."
"My legs are less happy after five days of hiking so it would be a lie to say that I am as fresh as a daisy. It was pretty physical out there but it was really shifty as well so I know it became a mixed day for some people. It wasn't just a case of having to work hard."
Hannah started sailing at Salterns Sailing Club in Lymington aged 8 and has fond memories of her first youth week at RLymYC 17 years ago. "I remember being in awe of the race officer, Stuart Jardine, who was an Olympian. That week I won the "Most Improved" Award, it really kick-started my love of sailing and of course was just the beginning of my sailing career."
Hannah regularly coaches back at RLymYC, inspiring the junior Laser and RS Tera sailors.
So what next for Hannah? "I have some big decisions to make now. Do I campaign for the next Olympics in Tokyo? And if so in which boat? I have been trying out lots of different possibilities and will have to see what works."
The Lymington.com are immensely proud of Hannah and wish her much success in the future!
