Command of the Seas: The Navy and the New Forest against Napoleon

Galleries and Exhibitions
Date: Saturday, 08 June 10:00 - Sunday, 01 September 16:00

Venue: St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery  |  City: Lymington

In the early 19th century Napoleon amassed an army 200,000 strong, poised to invade England. The only thing standing between this invasion force and Britian was the Channel Fleet. This unique exhibition tell the story of the period between 1793 and 1805, when Britian was at war with revolutionary France. It focuses on the important contribution made by three Admirals from the New Forest during the naval battles of the period and running up to the defeat of Napoleon's fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar.

The exhibition includes rarely seen portraits from private collections, returning to the county for the first time in over a hundred years, alongside well-known items such as the Nore Drum, on loan from Lymington and Pennington Town Council via the National Maritime Museum. The highlight of the show will e JMW Turner's second sketch for 'The Battle of Trafalgar', on loan from Tate. This loan has been made possible through the Ferryman Project: Sharing works of Art which is supported by National Lottery Players through The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the John Ellerman Foundation and the Art Fund.

There will be children's acitivities throughout the exhibition, including a 3D jigsaw of a ship skelton, and a weekend of events in Milford-on-Sea on 5-7 July to commemorate the bicentenary of Cornwallis's death.

The exciting exhibition has be created in partnership with the Milford-on-Sea Historical Road Society and the New Forest National Park Authority.
