This historic inn, formerly an important coaching inn, is located on the Downton crossroads on the main A337 between Lymington, Hordle, Milford on Sea and New Milton.
In a very convenient location close to town, forest and beach and with a large car park behind, it's perfect as either a destination in its own right or for calling in whilst passing!
You can see the royal oak in the picture, it's literally part of the fabric of the pub!
A traditional country pub, the Royal Oak offers local ales in a cosy bar area and then in a large airy dining room a well priced menu of home cooked food using many locally sourced, fresh quality ingredients.
Gluten free options, super Sunday Roast, special senior citizens' and children's menus are catered for.
There is plenty of comfy seating, all in very attractive setting, and lots of space for large groups and intimate gatherings alike.
On a fine day even in winter the sun streams through the south facing windows and for chilly days there's a warming dual facing woodburning stove.
Through the summer months when the weather's fine many guests choose to sit in the sunny, colourful flower filled garden outside.
In high summer the pub takes on a whole new life of its own with families on their way to or from the beaches at Highcliffe, Barton and Milford on Sea.
And families with children are made to feel really welcome.
The fully enclosed pub garden includes a large, purpose built, high quality play area. There is a dedicated children’s menu and you can also order many dishes off the main menu to be more appropriate for older children or adults with smaller appetites.
At lunchtimes on weekdays a special menu caters for the smaller appetites of our more senior residents and visitors, at a very welcome price.
The Royal Oak welcomes dogs in the public bar area but must be kept on a lead at all times.
During the summer months, you will also find the outside gardens in full bloom – the perfect setting to while away a summer’s evening.
The Royal Oak offers FREE Pub Wi-Fi to all customers.
Check out and follow the Royal Oak Facebook Page to keep up to date with upcoming events - you can make bookings via the page as well if preferred.
Main dining area bathed in winter sunshine plus warming woodburner all set a very welcoming scene. George and Shaun looked after us perfectly. Between three of us we tried: The burger! With excellent chips, separate bowl of mushrooms, and really fresh salad with tasty dressing. The mushroom stroganoff - was meant to be a "Golden Years" size portion but was very generous! And absolutely delicious The soup of the day - tomato and top rate.
