Lymington's Ocean Brothers start their transatlantic row.
Bartley Marketing will help you follow the brothers' progress across the Atlantic.
The Ocean Brothers set off from Gran Canaria at 0600 on Thursday 18 January 2018...
Departure time has finally arrived!
After months of planning, training and fundraising, Lymington's Ocean Brothers will set off on their unsupported transatlantic row this week. "Emotions are high, patience to leave is low. We just can’t wait", shared the brothers this week on Facebook.
Greg Bailey and Jude Massey will depart Gran Canaria for Barbados on Thursday 18th January. They will row continuously, day and night, swapping for one hour shifts each for several months - it could take them 11 weeks. The brothers will be completely unsupported throughout the 3000+ mile voyage, relying entirely on solar panels to power a water maker which provides them with vital drinking water together with fresh water for rehydrating freeze-dried meals.
"We are so grateful for all the support from our wonderful hometown Lymington of which we are so proud", shared Greg with us this morning by email. "We're feeling the full reality of what we are about to do without any support and having started rowing just a few months ago we're feeling pretty nervous but also comforted by all the training and preparation we have done."
Jude and Greg are rowing in memory of their late father and step father, Pete Massey, who passed away after a long and courageous battle with skin cancer. They hope to bring awareness to all those who have been touched personally by skin cancer and the challenges this community of people have faced.
The Ocean Brothers have worked tirelessly over the last twelve months to raise funds for the British Skin Foundation, which raises money to provide the vital funds towards researching the on-going race to find a cure for skin cancer. In 2014, 3280 deaths were caused by skin cancer in the UK, which equates to 9 deaths per day.
To date they have raised in excess of £62,000 and they hope that the total will increase to £100,000 for the British Skin Foundation by the time they reach the Caribbean.
