Great ideas for Mothering Sunday in the New Forest
10 ideas for Mother's Day 22 March in the Lymington and New Forest area, including ideas if staying home with Covid-19.
Mothering Sunday began as a religious event in the 16th Century, with in fact no connection to mothers at all! The word "mothering" referred to the "mother church", the main church or cathedral of the region. It became a tradition that, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, people would return to their mother church for a special service. This pilgrimage was apparently known as "going a-mothering", and became something of a holiday event, with domestic servants traditionally given the day off to visit their own families as well as their mother church.
Although in recent years Mother's Day has become more commercialised, it's a great opportunity to thank Mum (and Grandma!) and to spend some precious time together - or to remember special times together in the past.
I recall fondly skipping home from Sunday school with a floppy bunch of daffodils, lovingly tied with garden twine, off which a hand-made sugar paper 'card' dangled precariously... and Mum was delighted. I've kept all the gorgeously scribbled cards that my lot have laboured on over the years - this year I'm just hoping the teens might come out of their rooms so that we can spend some time together!
This year Mothering Sunday is 22 March in the UK. Here are a few ideas...
