Exbury Gardens - Annual Calendar

Exbury Calendar of Events 2006 - See EXBURY WEBSITE for details!

Ten things to see at Exbury before winter arrives

Ten amazing things to see before winter sets in are waiting for visitors to Exbury Gardens in the New Forest.
The cool damp summer has meant an extraordinarily long flowering season and many plants that should have finished blooming in September are well into their second flush, while autumn is painting many other trees and shrubs vivid sunset colours.
Head gardener John Anderson has come up with his top ten list of flowers, trees and fungi that will keep Exbury in the memory over the short dark days of winter.
Top of his list are the flaming Japanese maples, a blaze of colour. Then comes the beautiful plumy grass, Miscanthus sinensis, blowing gently in the herbaceous border and, throughout the gardens, the amazing variety of fungi, from the red and white fly agaric to the memorable magpie ink caps. You won’t forget the incredible ‘wiggly tree’, Platanus orientalis or the memorable ‘diamond lilies’ sparkling away in the Five Arrows Gallery. Coming in at number six are the brilliant ‘sweet gums’, the Liquidamber trees and next is the incredible ‘history tree’, whose rings show that it is more than 200 years old.
Special sight number eight is the view of Exbury’s cascades and autumn colour from the Top Pond while next comes the peaceful river walk with long views down the gentle Beaulieu River.
And finally, for a touch of complete exoticism there’s the Sundial Garden, stuffed full of tender flowering plants, salvias, dahlias, cannas, still blazing away next to ancient tree ferns and exuberant bananas.
“I’ve never seen so many things flowering away at this time of the year,” said John, who confirms that this has been a wonderful season for blooms. “We’ve even got enormous blue hydrangeas still coming out, although they normally fade away by September. It gladdens the heart to see all these flowers blooming away right on winter’s doorstep,” he said.
Exbury is open daily until Sunday November 11. Please visit www.exbury.co.uk for details.
