JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race Expands Weekend Programme of Events

The Island Sailing Club and title race sponsor JPMorgan Asset Management are pleased to announce plans to expand the Round the Island Race weekend of events.  While the race continues to form the main focus, sailors and spectators are invited to come to Cowes on Friday 22nd June to see the state-of-the-art Extreme 40s in action off The Green. This will take place between 1600–1800 and all are invited to come and view the spectacle from both land and sea.

Entertainment will start from 12 noon on Friday 22nd June, at the JPMorgan Asset Management Event Village at Cowes Yacht Haven. There will be live music and activities, including a sailing simulator, face painting for children and the opportunity to view some of the diverse range of boats including “Gipsy Moth IV” (the classic yacht in which Sir Francis Chichester made his solo circumnavigation in 1966), record breaking young sailor Michael Perham’s “Cheeky Monkey” and the high-octane Extreme 40 boats.

The Extreme 40s provided a nail-biting finish to last year’s race, with “Holmatro” finally taking line honours ahead of her class. The Extreme 40s will again be joining the 1,600 other boats to race around the 55-mile course on Saturday 23rd June and will have a good chance of breaking the course record which stands at 3 hours 8 minutes and 29 seconds.

These lightweight sailing machines are incredibly fast, reaching exhilarating speeds of up to 35 knots in the right breeze and flat water. This year’s race should see an exciting battle for supremacy as the fleet challenges giants such as the 100-foot “Leopard” for line honours and race records. The JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race will feature as one of the official three stand-alone endurance races that form part of the iShares Cup Extreme 40 season of racing taking place across Europe.

Campbell Fleming, Managing Director and Head of UK for JPMorgan Asset Management commented: “We were looking for an opportunity to expand the current event and make it more accessible to the competitors as well as the spectators who support this race from the shoreline.  The Extreme 40s provide an amazing backdrop for this extended race weekend and we are delighted to welcome them to this event.”

This year the ISC and JPMorgan Asset Management will be expanding the charitable dimension of the race by encouraging all entrants to make their race count for charity. A bespoke website has been set up to facilitate this. To register, simply go to http://justgiving.com/roundtheisland. Competitors can help fight cancer by supporting the race’s charity partners: Macmillan, Breast Cancer Care, Prostate Research Campaign UK and The Ellen MacArthur Trust, or choose their own charity.
