For Cod’s Sake....SHOP!

Basking Cod, the local Mecca for anything fun, kitsch and unique, has this month been trading at the bottom of Lymington High Street for 10 years!! CONGRATULATIONS from all at LDC! 

The opening of this funky store what seems like only yesterday did, and still does, make a huge impact on Lymington retail, drawing people from afar to get well known cult household brands such as Alessi, Karlsson, Suck UK, Lomography, Dirty Dog and Surfers Against Sewage. 

The individual interior space houses a huge range of merchandise from trash kitsch religious iconography to high quality kitchenware, adult accessories to a range of independently labelled fashion wear and kids toys to novelty gifts; the perfect recipe for a very enjoyable shopping experience created by owners Tony & Jess.

When speaking to Tony and Jess it becomes apparent that the shop for them is not so much a business but a lifestyle. Their quirky natures are hugely visible in the store and echoed in many areas, in the selection of items for sale housed, the layout of the store, the bold bright interior and their choice of centre-piece...a 4.5L boat engine...all in all the store is (to put it in Tony’s words) “SPANKTASTIC!”

Another obvious dynamic when you walk into the store is the pride that both Tony and Jess take in what they have managed to achieve...a store which spans all ages, sexes, and classes and a range of stock that is unique to not only Lymington but also the surrounding area.

Basking Cod is a very unique shopping experience and one that no amount of words will, in my opinion, ever give full credit to.  If you’re coming to Lymington, it really is worth a visit and one of those independent stores that we at LDC go on about as an asset to the High Street. Its the truth! Speak to any local and I’m certain that they will not only know this store, but shop their regularly...whether it be a lower priced novelty gift or a higher priced interior design item any purchase from ‘The Cod’ is sure to put a smile on anybody’s face.HM
