Westover Hall Hotel - Review

King for a day!

Nick Van Eede, a very old friend of mine, wrote many a great song including; 'I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight' & 'Been In Love before', but he also wrote a song which sadly never blessed a Cutting Crew album called 'King For A Day' and writing this review of Westover Hall Hotel, I find myself taken back to Nick's studio many years ago, wishing that firstly it had been released and secondly that I could convey in writing the atmosphere of that song to you. Because, that's what Westover Hall makes you feel like, a King for a day!

It surely is the mark of a great hotel, that it affords part time Royalty like you and me a chance to feel like you've come home to your favourite stately home, (rather like the US President must feel escaping to Camp David or the Queen to Balmoral), in this case once quoted as one of the most luxurious houses on the South Coast. The Grade II listed Victorian Mansion was designed by Arnold Mitchell originally for Alexander Siemens the German industrialist and subsequently occupied by Lord Nuffield. Now Stuart Mechem, his Sister, Arthur and the Staff work tirelessly but discreetly to ensure that you feel like it is your home for the duration of your stay and that you can kick back and relax in an informal or formal way just as the mood suits you.

The infamous Mr & Mrs Smith include this fine hotel in their collection of top Boutique Hotels in the world and deservedly so as the dining under Jimmy Desviviere is exquisite, the rooms elegant and inviting and the view spectacular. The latter is worthy of further comment and I would add that there are few places in England which offer such a view. In Summer the sea sparkles in the way that only an English sea can and looking out over towards The Needles on the Isle of White, sailing yachts, perhaps with coloured spinnakers flying, breeze by as you let the stresses and strains of daily life ebb away. There's even a beach hut down the hill at your disposal, which again highlights the inherent style and sensitivity of this family owned and run hotel. In Winter the Hotel embraces you in warmth in all ways, and the most extreme weather outside merely accentuates your enjoyment inside.

If your trip is important to you and you don't want to take a risk; if you want it to be perfect for you, your partner or both; if you want to be reminded that life isn't so bad after all and that you're special and wanted, then our advice is check into Westover Hall for some proper english rejuvenation and be a King even if for just one day! - JS
