Flybe Launches Maths in Flight Project with Swanmore College of Technology
Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline will welcome six gifted pupils from the Swanmore College of Technology on Thursday 28th February when they come to Southampton airport for a practical mathematics lesson to learn how maths is used in the everyday workplace.
The pupils will be given a tour of one of Flybe’s aircraft at Southampton Airport, followed by a working demonstration of the equipment used by Flybe behind the scenes, as well as completing a series of tasks back at Swanmore, designed to reflect on what they have seen at the Southampton base.
The tasks will include drawing up a timetable based on a flying programme for a day in Southampton and looking at Flybe’s baggage pricing policy to work out passenger costs for a number of different scenarios. The final part of the project will involve completing an aircraft eco label for each of the aircrafts that Flybe operates.
Mike Rutter, Chief Commercial Officer, Flybe comments: “Flybe strongly support our local communities around the UK and are fully committed to Southampton. As such, we are delighted to be able to help the Swanmore students and give them a practical understanding of how we use maths at Flybe.
“The tasks that the students have to complete differ in complexity and style and will challenge them to be both analytical and creative in solving them. Our experts on the ground will demonstrate to the students throughout the day how maths, numbers, figures and timetables are an integral part of the operation of an airline.
