20 ‘Champion Swimmers’ swim Solent

Thursday 23rd August, 20 swimmers successfully swam across the Solent in aid of Champion Behaviours, a local not for profit organisation that runs workshops for  11-15 years old who are in danger of exclusion from school and society.

CHAMPION BEHAVIOURS

The idea for the swim came to Max Kalis whilst ploughing up and down in the local pool. He offered to swim for a local charity and chose Champion Behaviours. On 23rd August Max’s ‘idea’ resulted in 20 swimmers joining him to complete the epic Yarmouth to Lymington trip.

After the swim Max said, ‘It's given me aching satisfaction, a ready-brek glow and a golden memory which I'll treasure, and I feel an inch taller somehow.’’

Kev Warren, a former channel swimmer led the swim and helped train them  on Milford Beach.  Champion would like to thank BHG Marine for supplying sweat shirts., The Haven Bar and restaurant for delicious after-swim chilli; the Hampshire Police Authority, Solent Events for the safety ribs; Barry Frampton for the safety canoes; the local Coast Guard and Southbourne Surf and Rescue. Vodafone who generously donated £5K and Volkswagen UK for their constant support.

The swimmers themselves have raised over £4K, but more is needed said Paul Stevens if  Champion Behaviours is  to continue its sterling work with young people and   help them become valuable members  of  society..  The Solent Swim will be used as an example of ‘Champion Behaviours’ in forthcoming workshops, said Paul.

Richard Lock, local photographer who successfully completed the swim in 1 hour 45 mintues,  explained the need to invest in young people, in the community and the need for local businesses and people to support such positive interventions as Champion Behaviours
