Opportunity for Trainee Furniture Makers to Make a Name for Themselves thanks to The New Forest Trust

Following last year’s successful Exhibition, the New Forest Trust is running a national competition again this year, for people in training to become quality furniture makers. This will give them the opportunity to make a name for themselves, as the first prize, kindly donated by INEOS an international company with headquarters based in the middle of the New Forest, is a commission to make a piece of furniture with a value of £2,000.

The New Forest Trust wishes to thank INEOS for supporting the competition.  INEOS support many community projects and is keen to work with businesses and local people to maintain an ongoing vibrant economy in the New Forest area. This is completely in line with the main aims of the New Forest Trust, and this exhibition in particular, to promote the conservation of the New Forest and help in practical ways to secure its viability for future generations. The provision of such a marvellous first prize will give the best start a young craftsman could wish for in their furniture making career.

This year trainees will be expected to use timbers from the woodlands of the New Forest.  Trees were donated last year by the Forestry Commission. Since then these have been sawn and kiln dried by East Bros at West Dean free of charge. More details on www.newforesttrust.co.uk

Now the Trainees are starting to pick up the planks of New Forest Oak and Beech to take back to their colleges where they will be used to make furniture to be judged at the New Forest Show in July (24th to 26th).

The New Forest Trust will be following the progress of at least one Trainee as he or she begins the journey through the competition from the source of the trees, to picking up sawn timber, crafting the piece of furniture and ending with the judging at the Fine-Crafted Wood Exhibition.

The New Forest & Hampshire County Show will be held at New Park, Brockenhurst from Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th July. Discounted advance tickets are now available on the credit card hotline 01590 622409 and from June 1st will be also available on line at www.newforestshow.co.uk
