When I visited the charming Mike & Barbara Walton recently for LDC, I was struck by the way in which we so often create pre-conceptions of places and things based on usually limited knowledge and vast assumption. In this case, I had got it into my head that The White House was fairly small and that knowing it was on the road from Lymington to Beaulieu it might be a little noisy and close to the road.
I'm delighted to report that both the latter are grossly incorrect and that in fact when you arrive and pass through the electric gates, the house towers at the end of a long sweeping and well kept drive. Once the door opens and the welcoming smile of Mike or Barbara embraces you, one notices immediately that this is actually a rather larger and more elegant home than you have envisaged. In part this is due to the photos which are soon to be replaced and which should really be done with a wide-angled lense and maybe that natural instinct to under-estimate things.
Three en-suite bedrooms are well decorated and spotlessly clean and offer high ceilinged rooms with all the usual luxuries and more. I also appreciated the great sense of light and airiness as well and a nice sense of privacy.
Downstairs breakfast is served rather appealingly around a large single dining table which is always presented immaculately and is brimming with all the options you can think of. I hear Barbara's breakfasts are pretty special and can include smoked salmon and scrambled eggs as well as the traditional full English.
If you are also perhaps on a mammoth tour and have a car full of gear, then you'll be pleased to hear that the parking area is plentiful and secure behind the electric gates.
Mike & Barbara have a website at www.thewhite-house.info which is very comprehensive, but take my word for it the photos don't do it justice. This is no cosy cottage, it is a very attractive and elegant country home where you will be treated exceptionally well.
