Shelbourne - A New Approach To Senior Care

The care home sector regularly receives bad press with cases of abuse, malnutrition and cruelty frequently reported in the media. Keen to shake off this perception, Shelbourne Senior Living, a new privately-owned company, is offering a refreshing approach to developing retirement communities that aims to change the nature of long term care.

Shelbourne Senior Living was established in 2006 and is led by Ken Waterhouse who has 20 years experience in the retirement sector. With the Shelbourne team, he is looking to raise the levels of care home accommodation, services and facilities, starting with its first development, ‘The Shelbourne’, in Sway Hampshire.

Ken Waterhouse explains: “I started my career in the retirement sector in 1987 and have seen enormous changes in the care profession. Care homes are still seen as a ‘last resort’ and carry a certain stigma. At Shelbourne we recognise that most people would prefer to remain in their own home as they grow older, but at the same time, they want companionship, security, peace of mind and may require a level of care and support.

“Shelbourne wants to make senior living a positive choice for seniors and their families. By providing premium quality facilities and activities, residents are more likely to stay active feel involved in a community. Above all, Shelbourne respects the importance of our resident’s independence, ensuring they enjoy a high quality of life and retain a choice in all aspects of their lives.

“We are very excited as we watch the Sway development take shape. The picturesque location means that our residents will enjoy The Shelbourne community experience, as well as having access to the village facilities and the wonderful surrounding area – with the New Forest on our doorstep and the Dorset coastline less than 15 miles away, residents and families are spoiled for choice! A warm and secure environment is just as important for resident’s friends and family who we welcome and encourage to enjoy the surroundings,” he concluded.

The 61 bedroom residential home is situated in the heart of the New Forest and will provide a range of accommodation and care options: from support cottages which allow residents to remain independent with an option of help when required; assisted living apartments consisting of catered studio and one-bedroom suites, again with care and services available as and when required; and the nostalgia neighbourhood which cares for residents with dementia.

“Dementia can take the form of many different symptoms and are often misunderstood. The Shelbourne team is professionally trained to cope with the varying levels of dementia and the nostalgia neighbourhood is a self-contained area of the community caring specifically for residents with these illnesses. The staff provide invaluable support in making sure our dementia residents maintain a quality of life in a non-institutional environment, while helping friends and family understand the nature of the illnesses,” explains Ken Waterhouse.

A show house will be opened at The Shelbourne in Sway on July 9, 2007 with the development finally opening its doors to residents in January 2008.  Extensive outdoor and indoor common areas are being built to accommodate facilities and activities such as:
•    The Shelbourne Tea Palace – for morning coffee or traditional afternoon tea
•    Beeton’s Restaurant – using fresh local produce where possible, in addition to home grown herbs and vegetables from the kitchen garden, breakfast, lunch and dinner at Beeton’s provides delicious, wholesome dishes
