Tres Bon - One of Lymington's long-standing favourite Cafe's has a major face lift!

Wayne & Jason's Tres Bon - Part of what makes Lymington so special!

Even if you love a place like Lymington and The New Forest as passionately as the Team at LDC do, it is still easy to forget what it is that makes the area so special. Naturally it is based on many different ingredients, but as yeast is to wine and dough to bread, I believe that Tres Bon is one of the places that makes Lymington especially what it is. Jason and Wayne have been around for years and I have been almost daily for some of them to pick up a baguette or sausage roll at lunchtime and smile comfortably to myself at the bevvy of beauties behind the counter with their straw boaters and efficient, hectically busy Englishness. It's a bit like cricket on a village green in mid-summer.....you may not particularly like the game even, but you appreciate the feeling it gives you about the country and tradition.

I have never been to Tres Bon and not had to queue for a few minutes.............and that's great; because it provides a moment to reflect of course, but also it has made me appreciate what a great business the two brothers Wayne & Jason run. Their work ethic put's most of us to shame as you will see if you happen to pass one of them at the ovens as you go through to the restaurant area, but there's always a knowing cheeky smile at the corner of their mouths and personally I hope they're earning a fortune because they deserve it.

Rather generously they've recently decided to update the restaurant, and it is now very much more Ed's Dinerish' yet still retains that English cafe feel which I hope there will always be room for in the town. Whilst I don't mind seeing more modern approaches to food and welcome bold new statements, I still need to fall back on a good honest unpretentious meal every now and then and it doesn't come any better than Tres Bon.

If you haven't tried their sandwiches, they taste much better than the plastic alternatives and the Duck Baguette with all the trimmings is superb. Just imagine our High Street sanitised to such a degree that places like this didn't exist; full of faceless multi-national chains with robotic staff looking past you as they deliver pre-prepared food from the back of a freight lorry. I like it personal...knowing Wayne and Jason and their lovely Team, hopefully growing old together and eating honest food prepared there and then in front of you. Sorry you big boy chains.........you just can't compete with that!
