Ancient Shipwrighty, Saturday 5th to Monday 7th May
At Bucklers Hard this May Day bank holiday weekend a traditional shipbuilding project will be carried out by The Centre for Maritime Archaeology in collaboration with Buckler’s Hard Maritime Museum, Beaulieu Estate and the Mary Rose Trust.
Visitors to Bucklers Hard this weekend will be able to see demonstrations of the ancient art of traditional ‘shipwrighty’ thanks to Southampton University Lecturer, Jon Adams, and his archaeological students.
The tools and techniques being used for the project are of the type that would have been used for thousands of years in the construction of wooden boats and ships- from prehistory right through to the fifty five built at Buckler’s Hard for the Royal Navy in the 18th and 19th centuries, three of which fought at the Battle of Trafalgar.
Many of the items the team will be producing will in due course themselves become Museum exhibits, helping to illustrate the richness of Britain’s maritime heritage. All timber has been felled as part of normal forestry management.
Bucklers Hard is open from 10.30am to 5pm daily. For more information please call 01590 614645 or visit http://www.bucklershard.co.uk
